Eight-floor Hyatt Place hotel topped-out in Wicker Park

Upon completion, the Hyatt Place hotel under-construction at North and Ashland will bring a total of 99 new hotel rooms to the Wicker Park area. This boutique hotel, designed by Chicago’s Legat Architects, is currently topped-out at eight floors and due for completion around the end of the year.

George Nediyakalayil is developing Hyatt Place- Wicker Park and will operate the hotel as a franchise. For over twenty years, Nediyakalayil owned and operated the Shell gas station that occupied the site of the new Hyatt Place development. Decreasing demand for petrol in Wicker Park however, prompted him to demolish his Shell station and seek zoning approval for the creation of a new hotel.

While the developer did get zoning approval for a new hotel, community backlash over the building’s initial design led Nediyakalayil to consider hiring a new architect before breaking any ground. April Maifield of Legat Architects provided the current Hyatt Place-Wicker Park design, which is more in-line with the aesthetics of the neighborhood.

No on-site eatery is planned for this hotel but the building will be located within walking distance of several popular Wicker Park restaurants. The hotel bar will be small (enough seating for around six people) but the neighborhood itself offers no shortage of larger Chicago bars.

The 100,000-sq-ft hotel will contain enough parking for up to 60 vehicles. Guests will have access to their vehicles through a valet service.

The seventh floor of Hyatt Place- Wicker Park was designed with an event space offering unobstructed views of the Chicago skyline.

In total, developers expect the build-out of the hotel to cost around $14.5 million. This Hyatt Place will soon join The Robey and several other boutique hotels completed in the Wicker Park area within the past few years.
